Sally Zinman (1937–2022) was a trailblazing advocate, organizer, and prominent leader in the psychiatric consumer/survivor/ex-patient (c/s/x) movement, dedicating nearly five decades to fighting coercive psychiatric interventions and building peer-led support systems.

Catalyst for Activism
Like many founders of the movement, Zinman’s activism was born out of her own traumatic experiences within the mental health system in the 1970s. After exhibiting behaviors that alarmed her parents—such as alienation and ceasing to use her name—she entered psychiatric treatment. The treatment she received from her psychiatrist proved to be extreme and abusive; she was reportedly locked in a cellar and subjected to severe mistreatment. After escaping and being forcibly returned, this profound betrayal of trust and loss of liberty radicalized her. She ultimately investigated and took legal action against her former psychiatrist, and emerged from the experience determined to champion the rights of others harmed by forced psychiatric treatments.
Key Contributions and Leadership
Zinman was a foundational figure in organizing early psychiatric survivor groups and translating street protests into sustainable, peer-run organizations:
- Organizational Building: She played a monumental role in organizing peer advocacy, particularly in California. She helped found the Mental Patients’ Rights Association in Florida before moving west to establish the Berkeley Drop-In Center. In 1984, she showed visionary foresight by organizing the California Network of Mental Health Clients (CNMHC) at a time when peer-run organizations were still fighting for basic recognition. She later led the California Association of Mental Health Peer Run Organizations (CAMHPRO).
- Publications and Literature: She was a vital contributor to the early survivor movement’s communications, editing and writing for the seminal underground publication Madness Network News. In 1987, she co-authored the groundbreaking manual Reaching Across: Mental Health Clients Helping Each Other alongside fellow movement pioneers Howie the Harp and Su Budd. This manual became a foundational text for establishing the modern peer-support workforce.
Stance and Legacy
Zinman was a fierce, fearless advocate known for her absolute rejection of involuntary mental health treatment and coercion. While she maintained radical roots, she also functioned as a highly effective bridge-builder and civil servant who successfully fought to ensure peer voices were represented in state and national policy. Zinman remained deeply active in the c/s/x movement, leading advocacy efforts, organizing coalitions, and inspiring generations of peer advocates right up until her death from cancer and COVID-19 complications in August 2022.
